T1D fitness trainer, Leanna Buchina was diagnosed at the age of five, in 1984. Now living with T1D for over 40 years, Leanna once navigated a world with less technology, leading to inconvenient methods of T1D management. Leanna found freedom years later through the discipline of fitness and weightlifting, transforming her journey from a life of rigid rules to one of empowered, calculated control.

Today, I sit down with T1D Runner, Christopher Roome. Chris is an endurance athlete and personal trainer who’s on a mission to help others with T1D break through limiting self-beliefs. Chris has run marathons, backpacked across Washington State and California, completed a Spartan Trifecta, dogsledded in the Arctic Circle, and recently accomplished a 50-mile ultra marathon — all while managing his blood sugar like a pro.

United Airlines Pilot, John Roth, is a commercial pilot who was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes at the age of 37 . He lives by the philosophy that discipline leads to freedom. He uses technology and data to proactively manage his glucose levels, enabling him to pursue a demanding career as a pilot. John believes in inspiring others by demonstrating what's possible with a resilient mindset and effective T1D management.

A T1D for 18 years, Amanda is a certified personal trainer and nutritionist on top of being an accountant. She now runs an education platform and social media account called Bolus & Biceps. Bolus & Biceps empowers T1D athletes, fitness (specifically in women), and the combination of T1D females focused on overall nutrition and health, by cultivating a community and spreading information on how to best optimize insulin management for desired lifestyle results.

Shawn Wicks, also known as The Diabetic Fighter, is a nutrition coach with over eight years of experience helping diabetics take control of their blood sugar and improve their quality of life. He primarily works with Type-1 Diabetics and athletes, but also helps Type-2s who are ready to make serious changes.

I dive into my personal story of climbing Mt. Washington in New Hampshire alone in the heart of winter conditions, experiencing minus 40 degrees. I read this story in the style of an audiobook, and though it has been years since I’ve accomplished this climb, I look back at blood glucose data, GPS tracking data, and archived records to try my best to provide you with accuracy of the real event.

Gary Forbes is a former professional basketball player who has played across the globe. Over his twelve-year career, he’s played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors & Brooklyn Nets. Gary completed his career playing overseas for leagues in China, Israel, Italy, and Vietnam. Gary is 1 of 3 NBA players in history to have played at the highest level while living with T1D. He is the only one to be African American and comes from a family of immigrants, having been born in Panama.

Delaney Holtey is a student athlete on the University of Iowa women's soccer team. Delaney, a Type-1 Diabetic of 14 years, is deeply passionate about health and wellness. As she nears graduation and prepares for chiropractic school, her experiences highlight the power of work ethic, mindset, and leadership. Our conversation is packed with inspiration and her amazing story of overcoming obstacles—both T1D-related and those inherent in highly competitive sports. Mark Jones-Maynard is a dedicated full-time firefighter and Nationally Registered Paramedic with the Westwood, MA Fire Department. Outside of his work, Mark channels his lifelong passion for music as a drummer, with years of experience across various aspects of music, including marching percussion, jazz band, progressive metal bands, and teaching as a percussion instructor. An avid sports enthusiast, Mark has always maintained an active lifestyle, with pickleball being his latest favorite pursuit. 

In May 2024, I spent seven full days on the Kahiltna Glacier and at Denali Basecamp. Denali is the tallest mountain in North America. We'll cover my time during the Denali Prep Course and how my T1D body reacted to life on the glacier.

Ben Wessel played baseball as a pitcher at the University of Rhode Island (Class of 2017). Just turned 30, Ben has had Type-1 Diabetes for 23 years since he was 7 years old. Growing up playing sports year-round and earning scholarships to play baseball at the collegiate level, he has learned a lot about how to maximize performance while controlling blood glucose.

Taylor Adams is a T1D mountaineer and flight nurse from Salt Lake City, Utah. He is the first Type-1 Diabetic to summit all of the Seven Summits (the tallest mountains on each of the seven continents, including Mount Everest) with an insulin pump.

We dive into my personal diagnosis events with Type-1 Diabetes. This first episode is a chance for you, the audience, to get to know me as a host. In a story-based format, we discuss my life leading up to my diabetic-ketoacidosis hospitalization. In July 2019, at the new age of 21, I lost more than 20lbs in less than three weeks ultimately discovering that I am a Type-1 Diabetic.
